How the Massachusetts PFML weekly benefit is calculated
PFML replaces part of your wages while you're on approved family or medical leave. For 2026, Massachusetts' state average weekly wage (SAWW) is $1,922.48. Wondering how much you'll get? It's the same math behind the mass.gov PFML benefits calculator — a two-tier structure:
How long does the benefit last?
Massachusetts PFML allows up to 12 weeks of family leave and up to 20 weeks of medical leave in a benefit year. Combined family-and-medical leave is capped at 26 weeks per benefit year (which runs 52 consecutive weeks from the Sunday before your first day of leave).
Massachusetts PFML FAQ (2026)
How much does Massachusetts PFML pay in 2026?
The portion of your average weekly wage at or below $961.24 (half the state average) is replaced at 80%; anything above that is replaced at 50%. The maximum weekly benefit is $1,230.39 in 2026.
Who is eligible for Massachusetts PFML?
Most W-2 employees and many self-employed workers who opt in are covered once they meet the state's minimum earnings requirement in their base period. See mass.gov for exact thresholds.
What's the difference between family and medical leave here?
Medical leave covers your own serious health condition (including pregnancy/childbirth recovery); family leave covers bonding with a new child, caring for a family member, or military exigency. Both pay the same formula but have separate week limits within the 26-week combined cap.
Is the PFML benefit taxable?
The medical-leave portion of PFML benefits is generally not subject to Massachusetts state income tax, while federal tax treatment can differ; confirm current guidance with the IRS or a tax professional.
